Open-cut excavation from Northern Boulevard to existing rail yard. Geotechnical engineering, underpinning.
Weidlinger Associates provided geostructural engineering services to Kiewit Construction on an open-cut excavation from Northern Boulevard to the existing rail yard. The excavation allows access for future construction and permanent structures. Weidlinger worked with Kiewit to design the support of excavation on the west side of Northern Boulevard for entry to the lower portion of the 63rd Street tunnel. The scope included removal of 50,000 cubic yards of rock and soil; installation of slurry walls, struts, and concrete support slabs; and preparation for tunneling below Northern Boulevard. Weidlinger's tasks also included tieback installation, grouting, internal bracing, groundwater control, associated utility relocation, ground improvement, ground support, and related work.
