Sustainability - Milestones

2009 More than three dozen Weidlinger structural and civil engineers obtain LEED professional certification supported by an in-house education program.

Weidlinger begins a research and design collaboration with Dr. Huiming Yin of Columbia University’s Carleton Laboratory to develop and test building-integrated hybrid solar panels that serve as structural elements and achieve unprecedented efficiency.

2008 Two Weidlinger staff members are invited to join the Green Codes Task Force, convened by Mayor Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Quinn ”to recommend changes to ‘green’ the laws and regulations that govern construction in New York City.” A report is scheduled for release at the end of the year.

2008 Weidlinger is one of very few structural engineers listed in the first-ever “Top 100 Green Design Firms” survey by McGraw-Hill Construction’s Engineering News-Record (ENR), based on revenues from projects registered or certified by major organizations. (view press release)

2008 The Queens Botanical Gardens Visitor and Administration Center (BKSK Architects with Weidlinger) earns a LEED Platinum rating and wins a national AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten Award. (In 2004, the concept design received a NYC Green Building Award.) (view project)

2008 Weidlinger management sponsors a Sustainability Initiative (WAISI) to accelerate the firm's commitment to carbon-neutral offices, LEED certification of professional staff, and in-house sustainability education and research.

2007 The LEED Neighborhood Development program selects the Stapleton, Staten Island, development of a 36-acre former Naval Homeport Site (Weidlinger prime), for pilot testing of a rating system that sets new high standards for community infrastructure. (view project)

2007 Four of ten projects featured on the NYC Department of Buildings website for meeting the agency’s high-performance green guidelines are Weidlinger projects, including the NYC Office of Energy Management Headquarters and the Seabury Child Care Center.

2007 Why the Wind Blows, by Weidlinger Chairman Matthys Levy, is published to praise by environmental activist Bill McKibben as “a straightforward, fascinating and powerful users' guide to the planet.” In this entertaining primer on weather, Levy takes a strong stand on climate change. Levy also lectures on the subject at a technical meeting in China. (view press release)

2007 Weidlinger successfully protects critical underground utilities during the demolition of the New Haven Coliseum, using high-tech analysis to design and predict the behavior of low-tech temporary structures made of on-site recycled materials. (view press release)

2007 In tests sponsored by grants from the U.S. Navy’s Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program, proof of concept is established for Weidlinger’s patented air guns, an environmentally friendly substitute for explosives testing of warships. (view project)

2007 Sponsored by a grant from the U.S. Navy SBIR program, Weidlinger provides software for designing a new fuel injector made out of stack actuators that increases diesel engine fuel efficiency.

2007 Weidlinger launches Version 2.0 of PZFlex, its proprietary virtual prototyping software that reduces the number of physical prototypes required for designing new piezoelectric and ultrasound devices. (view press release)

2007 The U.S. embassy in Sophia, Bulgaria, a Weidlinger-engineered project, is the first U.S. embassy to attain LEED certification; it also met stringent physical security standards. (view project)

2006 BusinessWeek names the Big Dig House in Lexington, Massachusetts (by Single Speed Design with Weidlinger), one of the year’s 10 best buildings. Engineered entirely of reused components from temporary structures constructed during Boston’s Big Dig, the house is subsequently featured in the New Yorker and on the Discovery Channel. 2005 Dr. Raymond P. Daddazio becomes Weidlinger’s third President and CEO and promises to lead the firm in designing structures that are both "greener and safer."

2004 The EPA Research and Administrative Facility in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina (by Hellmuth Obata & Kassabaum and Weidlinger), a 14-building laboratory and office complex and early showcase of sustainable features, receives a US Department of Energy Presidential Award for Leadership in Federal Energy Management. The project also receives awards from the US General Services Administration, the US Office of the Federal Environmental Executive, and the Ford Foundation. (view project)
